The Christiansborg Archaeological Heritage Project
Osu, Accra, Ghana

Welcome to the Christiansborg Archaeological Heritage Project (CAHP), a well-established on-going archaeological excavation project, and now a registered Non-Governmental Organisation Limited by Guarantee (CAHP LBG), based in Christiansborg Castle and the surrounding Osu District of Accra, the capital of Ghana.

Christiansborg Castle (or Osu Castle, as it is known locally) is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It has served several important functions over the years: a trading entrepôt during the Danish transatlantic slave trade; the seat of British colonial government administration; and latterly (but no longer), the Office of the President of the Republic of Ghana.

The Osu District is densely populated, with schools that lack adequate resources, has high unemployment, and very poor housing and sanitation.

CAHP LBG needs on-going funding for its valuable work in this community. Please make a donation if you can!

Thank you,
Prof. Rachel Ama Asaa Engmann
Director

The CAHP is a community-based archaeological project that seeks to build the capacity of the local community: to empower its members by promoting knowledge and critical thinking, so that they may become more proactive citizens in the future and achieve a better life.

To this purpose the CAHP has two significant areas of activity.

  • Archaeological Excavation in the Castle grounds
  • Community Education Outreach, comprising the community library, archaeological Art Club and the Murals Project.
